A blog for those of you interested in new and old music.
If you’re anything like me, music is way more than just a combination of sounds. It represents feeling and emotion; you hear a particular song, you feel something and you just can’t help but rock out, shake your ass or bawl your eyes out. More often than not music reminds me of a certain time/place in my life or sends my imagination off on a wild daydream, this next band and track does just that.
The Atolls – which I think is an awesome band name by the way – is made of two guys from the outskirts of Los Angeles, CA. Drummer Chris, and bassist/guitarist/vocalist/frontman Daniel, are a duo that truly are a ‘garage band’. Recorded entirely in their garage, their 5 track EP, ‘Get Popular’, is suitably well titled for the up and coming band.
Their latest track ‘Pop Song Animal’ (which can be downloaded for free here), is a fun, rough and straight to the point indie track saying ‘fuck off’ to intros and throwing you directly into the chorus within 30 seconds. And guess what? I LOVE it!
I can picture myself listening to this on an old school Sony Walkman wearing shorts, a chill plaid shirt and some classic aviators, roaming sepia toned Southern California (stereotyping much haha?). Pop Song Animal reminds me of ‘Cancel On Me’ by Bombay Bicycle Club; if you are a fan of them then you need to check out The Atolls and the rest of the tracks on their EP which are just a indie and just as good!
The Atolls describe their style as ‘cottage cheese' (I'm going to have to ask what that's about haha), and alternative; I would call it indie/rock - but bloody cool indie. Their music has a sun soaked/rough-cut feel you can only get from recording in a garage in California. I honestly think if ‘The OC’ teen drama TV show hadn’t been taken off air (and still had hot girls in it), The Atolls are exactly what I would expect and want to hear. What do good bands have to do to get featured nowadays? I really hope someone picks up these guys quickly. When I make my way over to LA I’ll make sure I try to see them play live!
Go and download their EP, and help support them by Tweeting, Liking and spreading their name by word of mouth!
